Art and Artists in the City Around 1800
The more than 600-page publication follows up on the international colloquium held at the Department of Art History, Comenius University in 2022. It addresses the often overlooked topic of art around 1800 and the associated anthropological turn in Slovakia. The book includes twenty interdisciplinary studies in three languages, examining key aspects of contemporary urban art from that period throughout several thematic units. It explores how artists and patrons sought new ways to express content for a society modernized by Enlightenment ideas, balancing tradition with innovation. Richly illustrated, the book presents new findings and reinterprets them within a broader cultural and historical context, significantly advancing the understanding of the subject. The design of the publication thoughtfully accommodates the extensive and varied text and image content.
