Retrotopia. Design for Socialist Spaces
Opening: March 24, 2023, 7:00 p.m
Retrotopia exhibition. Design for Socialist Spaces at the Museum of Art and Industry in Berlin was created in collaboration with eleven countries and provides an overview of selected representative and private interiors from the former Eastern Bloc. The result is a fascinating tour of diverse projects from the 1950s to the 1970s, which together create a comprehensive picture of design trends emerging behind the Iron Curtain. For the first time outside of Slovakia, the Slovak Design Center will present the unique interior of the Government Lounge from the Bratislava airport by architects Vojtech Vilhan and Ján Bahna from the early 1970s, which was completely saved in 2014. Among Slovak designers, Viktor Holešťák Holubár is also represented at the exhibition with his furniture design inspired by folk crafts.
The Slovak part of the exhibition was realized in cooperation with the Slovak National Gallery (candlesticks by Viktor Holešťák Holubár, cutlery by Ján Čalovka, interior photography with V.H. Holubár, reproductions of utopian architecture by Jozef Jankovič.)
