In the early 1960s, Kautman altered the perception of folk tradition in modern design. He left a distinctive mark, especially with his wooden animals. By simplifying shapes, he preserved their characteristic expressions. He used different wood types and specific techniques such as scraping with wire brushes and scalding over fire, thus achieving graphic relief textures on the surfaces of his objects.
