Visuality of the Romani Language
The diploma thesis explores the visual representation of the Romani language. The author operates under the premise that, for a minority language, visibility is as crucial as being heard. Unfortunately, the Romani language is entirely absent from the Slovak public sphere. In her thesis, the author investigates how this situation came to be. At a time when visibility is increasingly important, she seeks ways to make the Romani language both visible and thoroughly understood. The thesis documents existing knowledge about the origin of the Romani language, its codifications and codification approaches, and its specific manifestations in public space. The goal of the work is to raise awareness about the topic and to uncover new dimensions of the rights and responsibilities of graphic designers in contributing to civil society.
