Treatment with Sculptures: Juraj Gavula and His Work for Architecture
Slovakia owes a great debt to sculptors whose works enhanced the architecture of housing estates, schools, and hospitals during the socialist era. One such artist is Juraj Gavula (1942), whose contributions are now being fully recognized by the next generation. This monograph is the result of research by Gavula’s son, visual artist Matej Gavula, in collaboration with art theorist Daniel Grúň and other contributors. It is accompanied by extensive photographic material of the sculptor’s creations. Designers Aurélia Garová and Tereza Maco have given the book a contemporary visual treatment while drawing inspiration from design elements and typefaces from the period when Gavula’s sculptures were created. The book’s square layout shows the various stages of Gavula’s sculptural works. Notably, the bronze paint used in the book contains metal particles and is prone to corrosion.
