The Design Museum is opening the second historical exhibition of Slovak design.
The exhibition dizajn.sk (design.sk) presents a curatorial selection of representative, timeless, and unique works of Slovak design from the 20th and 21st centuries, primarily from the collections of the Slovak Museum of Design.
The main theme of the exhibition is the stories of Slovak design, told through individual works from various fields of design. They reveal fragments of the creative processes and ideas of the authors, unfolding against the backdrop of their time. A key element of the exhibition is a display system consisting of a series of upcycled lightboxes, which, even in a figurative sense, illuminate the iconic works of Slovak design.
“Slovakia’s diverse design history can still surprise us with a forgotten prototype, a handmade poster draft, or a drawing of a product that never made it into mass production. Contemporary Slovak design and applied art successfully present new paths to their own identity while also reflecting current social issues. Their future is being shaped by technological innovations and the latest opportunities for experimenting with creative potential, form, and material,” said Mgr. art. Maroš Schmidt, Director of the Slovak Design Center.
“Supporting design is for us an investment both in cultural heritage and in a creative future that meaningfully shapes society. Design is an everyday part of our lives – it influences how we live, how we work, and even how we feel. We believe that the exhibition dizajn.sk will not only offer visitors a look into history but also serve as an inspiration, proving that Slovak design has the ability to fuse beauty and functionality into one,” said the CEO of J&T Banka in Slovakia, Anna Macaláková.
Design is a living organism that constantly changes, grows, and develops. A distinctive feature of the new exhibition at the Museum of Design is its dynamic nature, which allows even in modest spaces for a continuous rotation of exhibits, presenting the latest acquisitions and works resonating with the National Design Award, as well as reflecting on the anniversaries of significant Slovak designers.
Design Club
In cooperation with the various departments of the Slovak Design Center, the exhibited items come to life in the exhibition and in the Design Club through guided tours, discussions with designers, manufacturers, theorists, and thematically rich accompanying events for a broad audience. Additional information and context are provided by professional journals and publications in the Design Reading Room and in the LOMA Materials Library. The exhibition also has its extended form online – on the website of the Slovak Design Center, where visitors can learn more about the works, personalities, and manufacturers.
With the exhibition dizajn.sk and the Design Club, the Museum of Design functions as a place where the history of design meets the present. We believe it will inspire future generations to preserve the legacy of Slovak design.
