From Public Space to the Digital Sphere: New Designum Issue Released
A new issue of our professional journal Designum has just been released, once again demonstrating the remarkable diversity of creativity in the field of design — from craft-based production to digital processes; from small-scale logos and visual identities to monumental works for public space, presented online, through temporary exhibitions, or within museum displays. These specific categories, however, require not only expertise, but also adequate care and financial support. The more we invest in the creative industries, the more we can expect their cultural value to grow. Beyond their social impact, the richness and diversity of design can also foster plurality of opinion and a closer relationship to diversity itself.
The new issue offers a wide range of engaging articles across its regular sections. In the Current section, Barbora Krejčová interviews Ivana Palečková, whose work spans photography, publications, visual identities, packaging design, illustration, type design, and relief work. Mátyás Zagyba looks at Veronika Selingerová’s ceramic reliefs created for the ZWIRN complex in Bratislava, opening up the question of the return of monumental works to public space. Miloslava Hriadelová examines how digital technologies are transforming both fashion design and brand communication. Dominika Lazorová reflects on the 12th Trnava Poster Triennial, where social and political themes resonated strongly. Lucia Dubačová presents transmediale as a platform for the critical reflection of digital culture and technology.
The journal also brings a perspective from the museum environment. Naďa Kančevová offers a critical response to the new permanent exhibition of the Slovak Design Museum, SCD dizajn.sk – History, Present, and Future of Slovak Design, raising the issue of how this field is supported and presented. In the Retrospective section, Gabriela Ondrišáková evaluates the book series edited by Ľubomír Longauer. Against the backdrop of the exhibition PREBÝVANIE, Wanda Borysko reflects on interior design as a discipline shaped by use itself. Robert Paršo reviews the publication DUŠAN JUNEK DIZAJN:FOR:UM and highlights its importance for the history of Slovak graphic design and visual communication.
As is customary, the issue also includes a presentation of two typefaces — Pareidolic and Wise Quote — by Michaela Badžgoňová, a student of the Typolab studio at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava.
The new issue of Designum brings together current topics, expert reflections, and inspiring personalities who are shaping the face of design in Slovakia as well as in the broader international context.
