Ondrej Gavalda

Graphic designer Ondrej Gavalda studied at the Secondary School of Graphic Arts in Bratislava, specializing in print graphics (1998–2002). He then spent two years at the Faculty of Architecture of the Slovak University of Technology, studying Design, followed by studies in Graphic Design at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava under Professor Stanislav Stankoci. He completed his degree with a Master’s in 2009. During his studies, he undertook an internship at Fachhochschule Dortmund in Germany.
After graduating, he began working as an assistant lecturer at the Department of Graphic Design (now the Department of Visual Communication), where he continues to teach to this day. His practice focuses on visual identities and book design, with occasional work in experimental typography and modular typefaces. From 2012 to 2017 he also worked at the graphic design studio KAT.
He received the Minister of Education Award in the National Design Award 2007 competition for his bachelor’s thesis; the Rector’s Award of the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in 2009 for the type system Face to Face; the National Design Award in Communication Design in 2011 for the visual identity of the Trnava Poster Triennial 2009; and the National Design Award in 2018 in the Design with Added Value category for a series of graphics and maps of technical monuments for Čierne diery.
