The design-research project EVOLVING PRINTS explores what happens when variability and impermanence of textiles are integrated into the design process as natural characteristics and qualities (Talman 2022). In the context of the climate crisis and overproduction, it offers an alternative to the linear consumption model. Working with locally sourced natural dyes obtained from kitchen or garden waste (in alignment with SDG 2), the project opens pathways to circular production. Time-responsive designs encourage slowing down and observing. The method of “intentional imperfection” fosters an emotional bond and enables co-creation within a relational/transitional design framework. The collection consciously engages layering and temporality, culminating in research outcomes, a collection, and reproducible printing techniques. The project was supported by a grant from the FPU.
