About us
The Slovak Design Center fulfills the role of a documentation, information, collection, promotional, consulting, research, publishing and study workplace with nationwide scope. It is a contributory organization operating in the department of the Ministry of Culture of the Slovak Republic since 1991. Its first director was Zdena Burianová, currently it is managed by Maroš Schmidt.
The subject of the center’s activity is to investigate, evaluate and clarify the impact of design in society and, based on scientific research, to systematically collect, protect, professionally process and make accessible objects of cultural value from the field of design, applied art and architecture and related disciplines through the Slovak Design Museum.
In its activities, the Slovak Design Center also focuses on the promotion and popularization of the field of design, namely by organizing competitions, especially the National Prize for Product Design and the National Prize for Communication Design. This goal is also devoted to exhibition activity in its own premises – in the SCD Satelit gallery and in the Gallery in the attic of the Slovak Museum of Design.
It publishes the only specialized magazine on design in the Slovak Republic, Designum, professional publications mainly on Slovak design. It provides information about active designers in the Slovak Republic in the field of industrial design and graphic design and services of a specialized library for the professional public. It operates the IS DIZAJN information system.
The Slovak Design Center cooperates with many design centers abroad and with international organizations of industrial and graphic designers BEDA, ICOGRADA. It develops permanent working contacts with other professional workplaces in Slovakia, including universities and secondary schools preparing future designers.
