Basalt is a rock formed by solidified magma. It can be remelted and shaped into fibers that are used in textile production. Basalt fibers retain stone-like properties such as resistance to fire, UV radiation, and chemicals, and they provide thermal insulation. The project “Novel” explored basalt fibers in a more personal and commercial product. Rather than a traditional rigid form, we worked with the material’s softness to create a portable oven with a basalt-based insulation layer. The layer combines a woven basalt textile with a layer of basalt felt, making the oven lightweight, foldable, and easy to transport. The insulation is removable, which simplifies cleaning and speeds cooling.
