The Stories Continue: We Are Preparing a New Exhibition – Dizajn.sk
After the conclusion of the successful exhibition “100 Years of Design in Slovakia 1918–2018”—Slovakia’s first exhibition offering a cross-section of the history and present of Slovak design and applied art—the time has come to refresh and reflect on new works and research findings. The Slovak Museum of Design, in collaboration with other departments of the Slovak Design Center, continues to actively search for, collect, and study design works in Slovakia. Design in Slovakia has long surpassed the 100-year milestone, and that is why we have decided to prepare a new exhibition that will capture its diversity, relevance, and significance—not only in the past, but also in the 21st century.
DIZAJN.SK Exhibition
The new Dizajn.sk exhibition, which is being prepared in the premises of the Museum of Design (formerly the Satelit Gallery) in the Hurban Barracks in Bratislava, will present design not only as a series of iconic objects, but also as a network of stories that have shaped and continue to shape it. Dizajn.sk will present a curated selection of representative, timeless, and unique works of Slovak design from the 20th and 21st centuries from the collections of the Slovak Museum of Design. It will build on the first exhibition 100 Years of Design in Slovakia 1918–2018 as well as the museum’s other projects: Museum of Design, Please, School – The Foundation of Life I & II, and Colorful Grey – Buntes Grau.
The central concept of the upcoming exhibition will be to tell “small” stories—of ideas, objects, creators, manufacturers, clients, and users. Each of these stories is part of a broader context of the “big” narratives of the era, society, and environment in which the design emerges and evolves. The exhibition will thus not only showcase the artifacts themselves but also offer insight into the processes that led to their creation, important moments in time, cultural phenomena, personalities, ideas, and innovations—along with the exploration of new shapes, materials, technologies, and functional possibilities.
Dynamism and Constant Updates
Design in Slovakia is a living organism that is constantly changing, growing, and evolving. That’s why one of the key features of the new exhibition will be its dynamic character. These stories continue to develop through new proposals, works, creators, ideas, facts, and interpretations. The exhibition will thus not have a fixed form—it will continuously change across space and time. It will occasionally feature new acquisitions that have enriched the Slovak Museum of Design’s collection since 2018, as well as works that have resonated within the National Design Award. The exhibition will also include pop-up events, such as “Design for One Day,” which will highlight specific objects, personalities, or producers.
Design as an Experience
The exhibition is designed to allow visitors to perceive design with all their senses—intuitively, through shapes, materials, and colors. The stories of design are also shaped by the people who give it life—who use it, live with it, and bring its purpose to life. They too will have their place in the exhibition through tours, discussions, and accompanying events. Moreover, the exhibition will have an extended version available online on the Slovak Design Center’s website, where visitors will be able to learn more about individual works, designers, and producers.
The new Dizajn.sk exhibition will be a place where history meets the present and where new stories are born—stories that will inspire future generations. Come and discover them with us—at the Museum of Design and online.
Follow the Slovak Design Center’s website and our social media channels, where we will keep you updated on the exhibition’s preparation and its official opening date.
The stories continue—be part of them!
